Disease severity as a percentage of leaf area covered by lesions was computed and the lesion type was characterized. The disease severity of F2 plants indicated a major dominant gene for resistance while F2:3 disease scores suggested quantitative inheritance. The two lesion types segregated monogenically among the F2:3 lines. Single marker analysis showed that the major gene for the resistance to Turcicum leaf blight is probably located close to the sorghum plant’s locus for colour and to Xtxp95 in the sixth chromosome in the sorghum genome map.

SIMPLE SEQUENCE REPEAT MARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH ANTHRACNOSE AND Turcicum LEAF BLIGHT RESISTANCE IN SORGHUM
Deployment of host resistance remains the most cost effective strategy for management of foliar and grain diseases, especially for resource constrained farmers. There is paucity of information on dual resistance in sorghum to both diseases. The objective of this study was to identify SSR markers associated with anthracnose and TLB resistance in sorghum for future use in markers assisted introgr...

ABSTRACT Partial resistance to Stewart's wilt (Erwina stewartii, syn. Pantoea stewartii), northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) (Exserohilum turcicum), and common rust (Puccinia sorghi) was observed in an F(2:3) population developed from a cross between the inbred sweet corn lines IL731a and W6786. The objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with partial resi...

Colletotrichum sublineola is an aggressive fungal pathogen that causes anthracnose in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. The obvious symptoms of anthracnose are leaf blight and stem rot. Sorghum, the fifth most widely grown cereal crop in the world, can be highly susceptible to the disease, most notably in hot and humid environments. In the southeastern United States the acreage of sorghum ...

Quantitative resistance to plant pathogens, controlled by multiple loci of small effect, is important for food production, food security, and food safety but is poorly understood. To gain insights into the genetic architecture of quantitative resistance in maize, we evaluated a 5,000-inbred-line nested association mapping population for resistance to northern leaf blight, a maize disease of glo...

The intermated B73 x Mo17 (IBM) population, an advanced intercross recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between the maize lines B73 (susceptible) and Mo17 (resistant), was evaluated in four environments for resistance to southern leaf blight (SLB) disease caused by Cochliobolus heterostrophus race O. Two environments were artificially inoculated, while two were not inoculated...
